Vajrapani, also called Chana Dorji and Chador is one of the earliest appearing bodhisattvas. He is said to be the protector and guide of Gautam Buddha. He is one of the three guardian deities who stand around the Buddha, along with Avalokiteshwara and Manjushri. Vajrapani is a sanskrit word where Vajra means thunderbolt and Pani means hand due to which he is known as “Holder of the Thunderbolt”.
Vajrapani is often depicted in a powerful stance, similar to the "warrior" pose from Hatha Yoga. He is shown dancing with a halo of flames, symbolizing the transformative power of enlightenment. In his left hand, he holds a lasso for binding demons, and in his right, he carries a vajra, a symbol of spiritual strength. Vajrapani wears a five-pointed Bodhisattva crown adorned with five skulls. Around his neck is a snake, and his belly is covered in jewelry. The snake and rain clouds are linked to his connection with dragons and storms, fitting his role as the thunder god. Though he looks fierce, his expression represents wisdom, not anger.
