One of the most popular devotional deities in Mahayana Buddhism is Avalokiteshvara (the Bodhisattva of Compassion) appears in many forms, but this eleven-headed, “thousand-armed” form is one of the most popular. He is represented with eleven heads and one thousand arms and each containing a single eye. The eleventh head at the top is that of parent Tathagata, Amitabha. The tenth head is terrifying and all ohters are placid. The principal pair of hands is held against the chest in the gesture of adoration while the uppermost hands hold the rosary and the full blown lotus. These four hands thus represent the aspect of the Bodhisatva known as Khadcheri. The other four hands display the jewel and the gesture of charity on the right and the pot and bow and arrow on the left.
Avalokitesvara is also known for his popular mantra, "Om Mani Padme Hung" which is the most popular mantra in Tibetan Buddhism.
