In Buddhism, Mahakaal is regarded as a Dharmapala ("Protector of the Dharma") and a wrathful manifestation of a Buddha. He can be seen in the entrance of every Buddhist monasteries of Kathmandu valley. Mahakaal appears as a protector deity in the various traditions of Vajrayana Buddhism, like Chinese, Esoteric Buddhism, Shingon and Tibetan Buddhism.
Mahakaal is dark blue in colour. He has four arms, three eyes and is of the brilliance of ten million black fires of dissolution, dwells in the midst of eight cremation grounds. He wears a garland of severed heads and a crown of five skulls symbolizing the five defilements. He wears tiger skin symbolizing the purification of desire. His right hand holds kartri symbolizing that it can cut ego-clinging and attachment and his left hand holds a kapala filled with blood symbolizing the subjugation of evil ones. He is adorned with ashes from the cremation ground and surrounded by numbers of loudly shrieking vultures and jackals.
