Shakyamuni Buddha

Siddhartha Gautama, often referred to as Shakyamuni Buddha, was born in Lumbini, Nepal, around the 5th to 6th century BCE. He was the son of King Suddhodana and Queen Maya Devi of the Shakya Kingdom in Kapilvastu. Siddhartha is considered the founder of Buddhism.

In his late twenties, during his trips outside the palace, he saw four things that deeply affected him: an old man, a sick person, a dead body, and a monk.

These sights made him realize that youth, health, and life itself are temporary, and that suffering is a part of existence. Because of this, he decided to leave his royal life behind and seek a spiritual path to understand and overcome suffering. After leading a life of mendicancy, asceticism, and meditation, he attained enlightenment at Bodh Gaya. Following his enlightenment, he chose to share his profound knowledge to help reduce the suffering of others.

After many years of teaching, he entered nirvana at the age of 81. Buddhists celebrate Buddha Jayanti (or Buddha Purnima) around the world on the full moon day of the Vaishak month. This day commemorates Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and entry into nirvana.

The statue shows the moment of his enlightenment at a place called Bodh Gaya in India. He is sitting in the lotus position—legs crossed with the soles facing up and his back straight. His right hand touches the ground to symbolize enlightenment, known as the "Bhumisparsha mudra". While his left hand rests on his lap, palm up, to represent generosity.

Amitabh Buddha

Amitabha is the head of the Lotus Family, one of the oldest and most important of the Five Buddha Families. He is shown in red, a color that represents love, compassion, and emotional energy. In stupas, he is placed facing the west. Amitabha lives in the western land of bliss, called Sukhavati. He created this Pure Land with the help of two Bodhisattvas, Avalokiteshvara and Mahasthamaprapta.

According to Mahayana Buddhist sutras, Amitabha was once a king in a distant time. He gave up his throne to become a monk named Dharmakara. After learning from the Buddha of that era, he made forty-eight vows to help all living beings. One of these vows, the Eighteenth Vow, promises that anyone who has faith, makes vows, and practices sincerely will be reborn in his Pure Land. Simply reciting his name, even ten times with sincerity, guarantees rebirth in this land of bliss.

The statue depicts Amitabha Buddha sitting in a lotus position— legs crossed with the soles facing up and his back straight. His hands are folded and facing upward in the meditation mudra, holding a bowl that contains the nectar of immortality, known as samadhi.

Medicine Buddha

Bhaiṣajyaguruvaiḍūryaprabha, also known as the Medicine Buddha, is a blue Buddha who represents healing. He is often shown holding an alms bowl with a sprig of myrobalan coming out of it. This plant, which grows in the Himalayas, is known for its healing powers and ability to help people live longer.

The Medicine Buddha resides in the eastern Pure Land called “Pure Blue Beryl.” He is accompanied by two important Bodhisattvas. Suryaprabha represents the sunlight, while Candraprabha represents the moonlight. According to the text about the Medicine Buddha, his Pure Land is special, made of blue beryl, and decorated with seven precious materials. Buddha Shakyamuni says that this Pure Land is as wonderful as Sukhavati.

A long time ago, when the Medicine Buddha was still a bodhisattva, he made twelve vows out of great compassion. These vows included helping people awaken their minds to bodhichitta. It provides what they need to live, guides them toward wisdom and good actions. It also relieves them of deformities, illness, and other physical suffering.  After many lifetimes spent fulfilling these vows, the bodhisattva reached complete enlightenment. He then became known as the Medicine Buddha.
